The SO.4050 Vautour II was one of the first post-war French jet aircraft. Its first flight took place on October 16th 1952, and it served in the French Air Force from 1958 to 1979. After the war, Lavochkin headed OKB-301, which, in addition to aircraft, participated in developing missiles for the S-25 “Berkut” surface-to-air missile system. Following Lavochkin’s death in 1960, the design bureau was named after him and gained renown for spacecraft such as the Luna, Venera, Mars, and Vega missions, among others. It remains in operation to this day.
