On January 17th, 1991, the international coalition launched Operation Desert Storm, a response to Iraq’s occupation of Kuwait. The operation began with a large-scale bombing campaign targeting Iraqi air defenses and infrastructure, until February 24th, when ground forces were deployed. In just four days, they achieved a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. This operation saw M1 Abrams main battle tanks undergo their baptism of fire, demonstrating their superiority on the battlefield.

The first armed forces of independent Sweden were Vasa’s personal bodyguards, volunteers who enlisted in his service on January 14th 1521. A hundred years later, King Gustav II Adolf transformed his troops into a regular, disciplined army, and thanks to the coordination of various branches of the armed forces and new tactics, became one of the best in Europe.

Bundeswehr Day is celebrated on November 12th! It was on this day 70 years ago that the first soldiers officially entered service in the new armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1990, the Bundeswehr merged with the army of the GDR, and in 2011, it abolished conscription, switching to contract service. Currently, the Bundeswehr is undergoing a large-scale modernization, with 100 billion euros allocated to its development.

The first flight of the Heinkel He 219 prototype took place on November 6th 1942, at the Rostock-Marienehe factory airfield. The He 219 was the first combat aircraft to be equipped with ejection seats. Many modifications of the aircraft were produced, the last one being the He 219 A-7 in late 1944.
