In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, 1915

Friend and foe alike, united by injury

Memorial day is a federally observed holiday in the United States which commemorates the men and women who died while in military service. It is held on the last Monday of May each year, and both those in the armed services and civilians alike partake. In observance of this holiday, people place American flags on graves situated at national cemeteries, and a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 P.M. local time.

To all of our players, we would like to reinforce the opportunity to remember our forefathers, relatives, and friends, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for what they believe in, for wherever they were, and for wherever they had been. As with other days of remembrance, commemoration poppies are scattered and bundled in areas where ceremonies take place. The American Legion Auxiliary distribute paper representations of poppies to fundraise during Memorial Day.
